Lovejoy was an outspoken Presbyterian minister who was murdered by an angry mob while trying to protect his printing press that he used to condemn the evils of slavery as well as to defend the freedom of speech. The Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument can be found in the Alton Cemetery where he is buried and was placed there to honor the outspoken and martyred abolitionist. The church, College Avenue Presbyterian located on Clawson Street in Alton and established in 1837, where Lovejoy was the first minister, is still conducting services! Other historic landmarks in 62002 with ties to the Underground Railroad or to the Abolitionist movement are the Old Rock House, located across College Avenue from College Avenue Presbyterian, which was the meeting place for the Anti-Slavery Society formed by Lovejoy; the house of Lyman Trumbull, the US Senator who wrote the 13th Amendment, is located on Henry Street; and the Enos Apartments on 3rd Street were originally built as a home for Nathaniel Hanson, an abolitionist, who was very involved in the Underground Railroad activities and had tunnels built under the mansion to hide runaway slaves. The Alton Museum of History and Art has many exhibits showcasing Elijah Lovejoy and the Underground Railroad. There are also a number of Civil War historical places in the 62002 zip code. The ruins of the Alton Federal Military Prison, also known as the Confederate Prison, is located in Alton on William Street at Broadway and was used during the Civil War to house Confederate Prisoners. The prisoners who died while in the prison are buried in North Alton Confederate Cemetery located off of Rozier Street. A monument was erected there in honor of those Confederate soldiers.

Three unique sites located in the Alton area are the Piasa Bird Park on Highway 100, which features an artist's rendition of the legendary Piasa Bird; the life-size statue of Robert Wadlow on College Avenue, Alton's "Gentle Giant"; and the the National Great River Museum located at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam off of Highway 143.
